About the Wilberforce House Museum

The Wilberforce House Museum was home to the British politician and social reformer William Wilberforce. It is located in High Street, in Kingston upon Hull and is listed as a Grade I building. These buildings are of special interest and may not be abolished or changed without special permission. The building is now part of Hull’s Museum Quarter.

Once the MP for Kingston upon Hull, William Wilberforce’s house is now a museum. The museum was re-opened in 2007 after a £1.6 million upgrade. There is a statue of Wilberforce in the front garden of the museum and it also received a £10,000 restoration in 2011. The statue was designated a Grade II listing and is part of the National Heritage List for England.

Next to the house is the Oriel Chambers, which is home to the University of Hull’s Wilberforce Institute for the Study of Slavery and Emancipation. The Oriel Chambers conducts research into the history and contemporary forms of slavery. It’s listed as a Grade II building.

There are many permanent displays at the Wilberforce House Museum, including personal journals and an original costume. There are also various collections related to slavery as well as his campaigns about it.

The museum is open daily from 10 AM until 5 PM and facilities include guides in French, Italian, German and Spanish, as well as facilities for the hearing and visually impaired, a picnic site and more. Children are welcome and the museum is open all year round.
